Even worse, I dont care how sophisticated the input system, I would
personally find it quite impossible to enter the Japanese character for
'koji', or any other meaningful chinese/japanese/arabic/hebrew
characters.

But what do you do when a package is written that uses the Japanese character for koji? You can't transliterate it to romaji because "koji" is already taken.
