I looked at the top-level README but I gotta admit I was equally lost.
And it says it "is no longer under active development", so I'm not
sure what the status is.

Thanks, this was one of the missing pieces for me :) It would help to
expand this out in that document.

I see, so it's dynamically re-writing the .gitmodules file(s) on each build?
