Still, I'm not sure that this accurately describes the situation. Particularly because (as I have noted in other parts of this thread) what we are actually talking about doing is simply "legitimizing" a behavior that is happening anyway and doing so in a manner that allows us to do a better job of keeping tabs on it. Instead of people who want a specific version of e.g. Node.js going to the nodejs.org website and downloading the binary tarball there, we offer them a place to download a vetted version of the same. We can then at least minimize some of the problems inherent there, like coordinating updates of bundled software. The developers of the world really are split between what I call "pure deployment" (with no bundled libraries and proper API/ABI versioning) and "rapid deployment" (where they throw everything together as a matched set and maintain the whole stack themselves).
