Well, I filed those matplotlib bugs, and, while I agree with you on the specific point that in this case they were spurious, I propose that running example scripts (or data, or tutorial, or whatever) is a reasonable and productive test case. I collaborated in fixing a longstanding bug in Tcl/BLT that was first documented as a demo crash. It doesn't look good when the application-provided examples crash.
