I'm not sure how valid this is any more: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51658 Basic issue is that r1xx/r2xx hw only has a limited number of render buffer formats while they support a lot of texture formats. Gnome shell expects to be able to render to the same formats they can texture from.
