Good news, after 4 hours on the netbook a kernel with a single modification (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m) does the job for kubuntu jaunty jackalope 32bit. The next step would be full disk encryption using the initrd tools. It would be fine if ubuntu offered a kernel with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m. Any chance?
