startx usually needs configuring the first time it's started up. startx has some parameters to do this and depending on hardware and software involved this may or may not work. Configuring startx is probably going to be the most difficult part for using gnome and gtk and kde for people without sight. redhat used to have a utility called SuperProbe which got discontinued and while that existed it made life much easier. It detected all necessary information about video and you could get that written out to a file. Not just the video card, the monitor attached as well too. If you can get sighted assistance to examine the monitor write down the vertical sync rate; the horizontal sync rate, the brand of video monitor, and the model of video monitor. All of that information will be needed to configure the monitor completely.
