Oh, I see. I didn't install the x server.
I thought that gnome and x was 2 different things.

Usually you start gnome when you start x11. You can start it with the
"startx" command.

braille in the meantime. I can't get ttsynth binaries for speakup, and
ttsynth-say to compile, so I figured out that I'll have a break, and then
give it another try when I've calmed down a bit.
