I'll make a guess and say you're probably using a keyboard with an alt key on it. If so, emacs recognizes that alt key as a meta key so you don't have to use escape. If you want to do anything more than that, you'll need to learn to bind keys properly and will also need to learn which keys aren't in use for other bindings.
