The one to use is just "getty", with a line near the end of /etc/inittab similar to the following (change as necessary): t0:345:respawn:/sbin/getty -r1 ttyS0 DT9600 Note the "-r1" is added to prevent certain respawning problems with some terminals, but you must press return to get a login prompt.
