Re: Seagate ST34321

Sorry, but I don't think I'm going to be much help here.  My problem was not with an individual drive, but with trying to use them in a Promise RAID array.  The controller writes information to the drive about the array and the Linux software was looking for it in the wrong place.  I actually haven't had any problem with the drives themselves hanging or causing trouble.  They appear to have several available logical geometries that are valid, so that may explain the difference between the label and your BIOS.  To check the drive out, I would recommend first backing everything up and then downloading and running Seagate's diagnostic tool.  That should be able to tell you if there are bad sectors on the drive.

Later,
Bob

Hi,  My name is Dave.
Have you been able to solve your problem dated
04/17/02
see:
https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/ataraid-list/2002-April/000681.html

I am having intermittent system hangs with this drive
and have some of the same geometry questions you do.

I am repairing a 4 year old system for a customer who
has had this hanging problem from the start, yet
didn't return it for service under warn..
Now the problem is beginning to occur more frequently
and wants to see if I can fix it.

Write if you need more info, working on it for days,
can't make it occur although it appears sometimes to
have to do with the disk drive.

Here is what it should be:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ata/st34321a.html

SEAGATE Support:
ST34321A Illustrated Configuration
Capacity:                                  4.3 GB
Speed:                                                   5400 rpm
Seek time:                                  11.5 ms
Cylinders:                                  555
Heads:                                                   240
Sectors:                                  63
SeaFAX#:                                  343212

and what I see from BIOS
As BIOS Setup:                 LBA, UDMA, 4303 MB
HARD DISKS                 Pri Mstr
TYPE                                  User
SIZE                                  4302
CLYS                                  523
HEAD                                  255
PRECOMP                                  0
LANDZ                                  8893
SECTOR                                  63
MODE                                  LBA

What ever happened, I'll be waiting to hear
Thanks in Advance
B. David
