The place apparently is an ecological mess:

The South Weymouth Naval Air Station (SOWEY NAS) was administratively closed on September 30, 1997 under the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990 (BRAC), Public Law 101-510, as part of the BRAC Commission?s 1995 Base Closure List (BRAC IV). The facility was operationally closed on September 30, 1996.

A Federal Facility Agreement was signed in November 1999 and became effective in April 2000. This agreement establishes the Navy as the lead agency for the environmental investigation and cleanup of designated sites within SOWEY NAS property, with the EPA providing oversight.

A Phase I Remedial Investigation was completed in July 1998. The investigation included collection and analysis of surface water, groundwater, soil and sediment.

Field work for a Phase II RI was completed in June 2000. The investigation further characterized the site by investigating the bedrock groundwater migration pathway; refining the Base Conceptual Site Models and updating ongoing geographical information systems; revising the human health risk assessment (HHRA) to include the Phase II data; and, refining the Tier 1 Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) and prepare a Tier II ERA. The Navy has completed the Final Phase II Remedial Investigation (RI) reports for all seven CERCLA sites. The seven CERCLA sites include the Small Landfill, Rubble Disposal Area, West gate Landfill, Fire Fighting Training Area, Tile Leach Field, Sewage Treatment Area, and Abandoned Bladder Tank Fuel Storage Area.

Another site, Building 81 was being investigated as a petroleum site under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan. In August, 2001, because chlorinated solvents were detected in soil and groundwater samples, this site was transferred to CERCLA. An innovative technology (Fenton?s reagent for chlorinated solvents) pilot study was unsuccessful at Building 81.The Navy completed a draft Remedial Investigation Work Plan in September 2002.

A Draft Final RI was completed by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in December 2000 for the USCG Buoy Depot. Also the USCG completed a draft FS in March 2001. The USCG also completed an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis report in May 2002 and is now determining the best way to proceed.

Does anyone here live near the former Weymouth Naval
Airstation in Weymouth, Massachusetts?
It's been dormant for some time, and has been the
subject of plans for shopping malls and industrial
complexes.

What's happening with it now? I've always believed
that it would have made a great commuter airport.

Thanks,
