Hi Jim,

From what I can see from the information you've provided, your installation really doesn't like your graphics card. From a quick Google search, it would appear that the 'NV40' in the error messages refers to a fairly old nVidia graphics card. As a new user of this forum I don't know if I'm stepping on toes, but I'd suggest that firstly you try and find out what your graphics card actually is, particularly if you're the owner of a brand spanking new system (if you're a windoze user you should be able to determine this from Start | Control panel | Hardware and Sound, then look for options regarding your display)!

If that's a little unpalatable, I do have a couple of links for you:
Configure an nVidia card. The steps taken here may be suitable for you to replicate :-)
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/nvidia-yum-kmod/
There's a configuration request posting that might be some use:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/users/2006-August/305155.html
View your hardware in Fedora (I did find this a little hard to follow personally) http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/01/view-hardwaresystem-information-in-fedora-14-laughlin-with-hardinfo/

Also, it would appear that prior to updating your stuff with yum, it's always a plan to update the version of yum itself:
yum update yum

(Note: You *can* update all installed packages with:
yum update
but you may [at least in principle] leave yourself open to a security breach if there's a nefarious soul out there with dodgy packages...)

Hope that at least gives you some other things to try. Good luck.

Best wishes,

And.

F17 / KDE

It will crash when trying install.

It will crash when your trying do yum update.

There is no pattern as to when it will crash.

When the crash happens it takes you back to a black screen with a lot of white print.

Below is the last three lines of crash when I was trying to do a yum update

889.604907 [drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Setting dpms mode3 on vga encorder (output 0)

And Kemp
Thanks for the info, since the video adapter is not going to peacefully co-exist with Linux , I happen to have another PCI-e card in my junk box and I installed it and have not had a CRASH yet.

Thanks for the info on the on the app Hardinfo I installed it and it works great.
