was the default before (before we changed anything), wasn't it?

Yes it was and still is. There should be a reason why it has suddendly
stopped working.  I would restore the old behavior.

I found that I'm not the only one with this problem and one solution
(that can't work for long) consists in copying the missing icons in the
folder for the CrystalSVG (in my case) set from hicolor.

But as I said this would work up to the next update to the icon sets.
