Because of this discussion, I just tried it again.  I switched back to 
nouveau (which is _much_ more trouble than it should be), and then tried 
playing some videos.  In full screen mode, both vlc and kaffeine showed 
tearing in nouveau, but not in nvidia.  For me, nouveau is still 
unacceptable.
