Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>hardware tab>ALSA from drop-down list>ApplyAutomatic sound-system restart attempt gets stuck in a loop.
Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>hardware tab>autodetect from drop-down list>ApplyAutomatic sound-system restart completes with no errors.
Starting xmmsIn preferences, changing to alsa.Try to play a song:error:  "Couldn't open audio.  Please check that:  your soundcard is configured properly, you have the correct output plugin selected, no other program isblocking the soundcard"
Rebooting.
less /var/log/boot= Saved ALSA mixer settings detected; aumix will not touch mixer.
Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>hardware tab>ALSA from drop-down list>Applyautomatic sound system restart is successful
running alsamixer: only shows usb webcam mic(don't know how to change devices in alsamixer)
running alsaconf:shows PCI soundcard Ensoniq AudioPCI and all mixer settings are un-muted and nominal
Running Main kde menu>Settings>Sound & Multimedia>Sound System>test soundsilence
starting xmms:  no errors
starting a song:  song plays but with silence.
