OK, here are the modprobe.conf changes.

# remove this if sound is configured ---> added #
#alias char-major-116    /bin/true    
# ---> inserted
alias sound-slot-0 snd_maestro3    

And still not working. Note the following are in /etc/modprobe.d/sound

alias snd-card-0 snd_maestro3
alias sound-slot-0 snd_maestro3

Searched dmesg and found no reference to snd, sound, maestro or alsa. 
Also /var/log/messages. I don't find updatedb or locate?
