Simon,

See what the system log has to say (/var/log/messages, or just `dmesg`), 
but whenever I've seen this error before it's been due to different 
versions of alsa trying to run at the same time.
Check all the alsa modules are unloaded before you run the command you 
ran, and make sure (this happens with Gentoo, don't know if Debian has 
the same problem) that there aren't two different sets of alsa modules 
within /lib/modules/yourkernel.
