AD1988 hda-intel spdif distortion.

Hi All,

Have spent a couple of days researching this issue and come
up empty. I hope someone can help as this is stopping an
otherwise perfect HTPC build (and I have no option for an
external soundcard, except maybe usb).

I am running an Asus p5b-e motherboard with onboard soundmax
AD1988 sound chip.

OS is Suse 10.2 kernel 2.6.18.8-01-default.

Initially using alsa 1.0.13-22.

The machines is hooked via coaxial spdif to an external
Onkyo 777 amp. I have configured all audio to go to spdif
via .asoundrc and I get audio in all applications as
expected.

The results I get are this:

1. Any DTS or AC3 audio routed via spdif works perfectly,
crystal clear.
2. Any PCM audio (avi, mp3, wav) etc routed via SPDIF
exhibits distortion.

the distortion happens at any volume and doesn't get worse
as volume increases.

I have compiled 1.0.14rc3 from source and installed however
the problem persists.

Research had me thinking that I have an issue with 48khz
output but I've since had windows on the machine and found
no problems with 44.1khz or 48khz PCM output over spdif.

Any help anyone could offer would be very much appreciated.
At the moment this is a showstopper for me.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Rick.
