Only 1 note played: alsa midi conflicts with chrony

In another thread I reported problems with aplaymidi with a 'Creative SB
AWE64 PnP' board. Once the right modules were loaded and a sound font
installed with asfxload, aplaymidi (and similar programs) just played a
single note. strace showed that the last call was
ioctl(3, SNDRV_SEQ_IOCTL_SET_CLIENT_POOL, 0xbf8f1130) = 0, but that the
cpu was very busy: the time was being used by chronyd
(http://chrony.sunsite.dk/) which was pathological.

Stopping the chronyd daemon cleared the problem: aplaymidi then worked
properly. Restarting chronyd sometimes blocked a new invocation of
aplaymidi, but not on all occasions.

This is on a debian sarge system (with some backports) but with a stock
2.6.18-3 kernel. However, I am confident that the problem has been
around through several generations of recent kernels: probably since I
installed chronyd.

I am intending to bug report this, at least to the chrony people and
into the debian bugzilla system.

I doubt that this is very specific to this system, and I am not sure
what information would be most relevant to the maintainers and developers.

A Lawrence
