Thanks for the reply. I have now found the culprit: there is a conflict of some sort with chronyd (ntp clock synchroniser). Stopping chronyd allows aplaymidi, pmidi and playmidi to work. I think this bug deserves a new thread so my workaround is easier to find in the archives. And if there is an alsa-bugzilla, I had better put something in there.
