I had problems when using ALSA modules compiled from package alsa-source against earlier versions of kernel 2.6.18 conflicting with a kernel compiled from linux-source 2.6.18-6 (which is based on 2.6.18.3). To fix it, I recompiled the ALSA modules from alsa-source after linux-source 2.6.18-6 had been installed and unpacked.
