(I'm running Debian Unstable and have a SB Live! 5.1 model SB0220 - 
EMU10K1 chip).

I had problems when using ALSA modules compiled from package alsa-source 
against earlier versions of kernel 2.6.18 conflicting with a kernel 
compiled from linux-source 2.6.18-6 (which is based on 2.6.18.3).

To fix it, I recompiled the ALSA modules from alsa-source after 
linux-source 2.6.18-6 had been installed and unpacked.
