Mouse problems with SuSe 9.1 Personal

Hi, I am fairly new to Linux and have posted this problem to several forums with no success. After booting up, into the GUI, the mouse intermittently goes crazy. It jumps around the screen, opens/closes windows, etc. Sometimes the escape button helps but the system is totally unusable in the current state. I will try to provide as much data as possible but had to create this posting from Windows because getting the file contents (XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log) was impossible (for me) using the linux system.

I am using a PS/2 mouse. The XF86Config:

Section "InputDevice"
Driver "mouse"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Option "ButtonNumber" "2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Name" "Autodetection"
Option "Protocol" "ps/2"
Option "Vendor" "Sysp"
EndSection

I found several postings related to gpm, and so based on a comment in one of the SuSe forums, I did a chmod 644 on the gpm program, in an attempt to keep it from starting/running. Previously, I also switched out of the gui (ctl+alt+F1) and stopped the gpm process, went back to the gui (ctl+alt+f7) and still encountered the same problem.

I viewed the /var/log/XFree86.0.log and it says that the version number is 4.3.99 (4.4.0 RC2) .

Any suggestions?
