Generally, X can be stopped by pressing [CTRL]-[ALT]-[BACKSPACE] and
you may be dumped to a terminal. I don't know if this is what would
happen on VirtualPC, though.

If you can get to the XFree86Config file, you can change the Driver
line to "vesa" and your X server should use a VESA driver.
