silicon motion driver and int10 crash

We're using a XFree86 Version 4.2.0 on a new board using a LynxEM+ 712 chip 
and a 640X480 DSTN LCD.

I'm using the silicon motion driver

It correctly loads, identifies the chip and starts X with the following

I'm thinking this has to do with the BIOS, but I'm not sure.

The LCD comes up displaying X, but looks grainy, and many of it's pixels 
appear to be "floating" like they're liquid.

When the "BlankTime" option expires, the screen turns black. When I hit a key 
to return it does and LCD looks fine, it no longer has any problems after 
that.

What could cause that? 

I have tried changing the "UseBIOS" option to "false", but then the LCD comes 
up foggy, like it's contrast is way off.

Neither the board, BIOS, or the kernel are configured for power management.

Any ideas are appreciated.
Also if someone could tell me an easy way to change the verbosity of X it 
would help. Plus can anyone point me towards a tutorial of how to compile the 
XFree project? I would like to monkey with the drivers but can't figure out 
the make scheme.
