  I think your problem may be that you used the "precompiled driver".  If I
remember
Winischhofer's instructions, the precompiled drivers are very specific as to
the version
of X they were built for, and the gcc version used for the build.  Since you
have a brand
new Mandrake release, I suspect that the prebuilt driver may not work.
Download the
driver source, and then download XFree86 source for the version that comes
w/Mandrake.
Follow Winischhofer's directions which worked fine for me.  Use the newly
built driver
generated by this procedure rather than the precompiled one.
