Subject: [XFree86] startx hangs - SiS 740

Brand new Cybertron machine, installed Mandrake 9.2, everything works

great

so far except X - startx produces a blank screen and hangs there. Tried

the

new Mandrake XFree86-4.3-24mdk rpm compiled Oct. 7 and also tried the
precompiled sis_drv.o from winischhofer.net. Same result each time, just a
black screen, no errors that I can see. I have to Alt-F1 to get my shell
back. Any ideas?

Motherboard: M810D
Chipset: SiS740 (and SiS962L)

I think your problem may be that you used the "precompiled driver". If I remember Winischhofer's instructions, the precompiled drivers are very specific as to the version of X they were built for, and the gcc version used for the build. Since you have a brand new Mandrake release, I suspect that the prebuilt driver may not work. Download the driver source, and then download XFree86 source for the version that comes w/Mandrake. Follow Winischhofer's directions which worked fine for me. Use the newly built driver generated by this procedure rather than the precompiled one.

Hm. Did I perhaps get a crippled message? The Log the original poster attached ends like this:

(II) Module bitmap: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.3.0, module version = 1.0.0 Module class: XFree86 Font Renderer ABI class: XFree86 Font Renderer, version 0.4

The sis driver wasn't even loaded at that time...
