hi, i am a complete novice at installing XFree86 version 4.2.0 for Linux. i installed Linux 8.0/2.4.18-14 on a store-bought emachines PC but did not install the X Window - the machine has an HP pavilion mx703 monitor and GeForce4 MX video hardware (Nvidia mfg), however, this monitor/video hardware would not allow proper X Windows configuration. i skipped the X Windows configuration step from a CDROM installation, planning to do the X configuation at the root prompt. however, when i ran "redhat-config-xfree86" at the root prompt, i soon thereafter ran into error messages stating, (EE) VESA(0): No matching modes (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found. the logfile at /var/log/XFree86.0.log notes that i am using XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release 4.2.0-72)/ X Window System release date 23 January 2002. is it obvious what the problem is? am i using a slightly out-of-date XFree86 that does not recognize this HP monitor/video card combination? will i need to get XFree86 Version 4.3.0? is it certain that the more current XFree86 version WILL recognize my monitor/video card? is there a simpler solution to get things working? i don't yet know how to copy the /etc/X11/XF86Config & /var/log/XFree86.0.log files onto a floppy on the Linux PC (so that these files can be put onto a web email such as this). however, the essential info is above, i believe. would be extremely helpful for Linux PC insights for this problem! text-mode linux appears okay but "startx" is definitely not allowing use of X Windows at present. Rich Pan, Washington, DC 202 829-9732 this pc and monitor were bought recently from Best Buy, an eMachines T2865, a i686, which had Windows XP Home running on it originally. _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@xxxxxxxxxxx http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
