You probably have a virtual resolution which is bigger than the one used by X this can happen because either - a virtual resolution is specified in XF86Config - you have two or more resolutions in your mode (display subsection of the screen section) * more likely* In this case the virtual resolution is the biggest specified resolution and the real resolution is whatever X manages to get leading exactly to what you describe. To top it all you usally don't get a slider allowing you to get to those part of the screen which are not displayed... If you really want help you should post both your XF86Config (resp.
