[XFree86] image shakes: setting particular frequency for a particular resolution

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

 Hi,

  XF86-4.3 (from Mdk 9.1 distro), on-board chip SiS 630 (PCI ID 1039:6300 (rev 31) )
  Monitor: 19" Future Power.

 Problem :
My monitor image "shakes" (about 0.1mm left-right, I
guess, at aboout 30Hz, I guess ?), especially when the
fridge or airconditioner comes on. (This is most visible
when a lot of white is displayed, such as when browsing.
When black xterm covers the whole screen, it is not as
noticable.)

  This is at 1280x1024.
XVidtune says:
Vendor: Plug'n Play, Model:
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0: 30.00 - 110.00
vsync range 0: 50.00 - 150.00

For 1280x1024 :
  Horizontal Sync Vertical Sync
     79.73kHz 74.79Hz
"1280x1024" 135.22 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync

When I switch : Ctrl-Alt-+ to lower 1280x960, the screen is
brigher, sharper, and, most importantly, doesn't shake any
more .. just perfect ! Xvidtune says:
  Horizontal Sync Vertical Sync
     60.10kHz 60.10Hz
"1280x960" 108.18 1280 1376 1488 1800 960 961 964 1000 +hsync +vsync

So I'm guessing the image is shaking due to interference
of AC (North American 60hz) and Vertical Sync Freq (some
interference at 74.79Hz but none at 60.10Hz). Is this the
right guess ?

If this is right, is there a way to tell X to go at 60Hz
at 1280x1024 ? (It's nice to have that bit of an extra real
estate ...) Or, even, is there a way to fine-tune it to
higher freqs, so there is no flicker effect, *and* keep
fine-tuning the frequency until ther is no shaking either ?

Any suggestions as to how I could stop the image from
shaking at 1280x1024 - no, I cannot get rid of my monitor,
fridge, air conditioner, or other life-sustaining devices :)
 - would be most appreciated.

   Thanks a bunch in advance,

      John
