First Thing I want to say is, no HTML-Mail and a _real_ linebreak at
about 74 chars, because many people read mail with text-agents, please.

Should be no Problem, as your graphic card could do (theoretical) a
resolution of 3739x2991 with 32 MB video memory, but that would probably
burn your monitor ;-). My PC runs at 1600x1200
with a TNT2 and the nvidia-driver.

You mean a shutdown of X11 right?! I've never used Redhat, but the log
is needed to help you.

The "waiting for X server to shutdown" is a normal message from X11 -
the last one on the console and in the log. Maybe you should do a pstree
while running X11 and look, which progs are started. Try to throw out
the ones you don't need and see if some errors disappear.

That's right, but anyway: Are you sure your HD and your RAM are not
damaged?! As the error description is very general I can't think of
more.

Are you sure your system hangs?! I know that some X-Config Programs
don't really hang, but are using very much time to detect the hardware,
try to change to another console or wait 10-20 minutes.

Yes powering off a "High End" OS is not very good.

Under Suse and Debian, these are in /var/log/XFree86.X.log, where X
stands fir the display number (normaly 0).
