DPMS no longer works!

DPMS will no longer set my monitor in [standby|suspend|off] mode, it used to work but since upgrading XFree-4-libraries and XFree-4-clients the monitor does not power down.

In console mode the FreeBSD "green" screensaver DOES power down the monitor.

 My particulars:

"xset dpms force [standby|suspend|off]" does nothing!

 Anyone have any thoughts?

TIA
