Some people blame the Sound Blaster Live! for all sorts of instabilities.
I don't know how true this is, but it was certainly hashed over at length
on various RH7.2 lists.

Well, RH now is on version 7.3 (Valhalla) which comes with XFree86 4.2.0.
This contains the DRI acceleration infrastructure, all sorts of updates to
and bugfixes for drivers etc. I would suggest that you upgrade at least
your XFree86 version to the current one (4.2.0) and the easiest way to do
that with a RH system would be to update the whole OS.

What exactly are you doing with Xconfigurator? What do you mean by
"moving up run-levels"?

Seriously, it's probably much easier to update to RH7.3 unless you have
really good reasons to preserve your system as it is. There are probably
more people conversant and interested in current issues with current
software than older versions. You are more likely to tap into a rich
knowledgebase by running current software. You sound like you've searched
for answers on this before and had no luck, so unless you have a very
strong reason to stay with RH7.3 then upgrading is probably the path of
least resistance.

AFAIK and I may be completely wrong, RH7.1 kernels were not compiled in
such a way as to allow interaction with the DRI architecture of XFree86.
The last version of XFree86 that worked without additional tweaking on
RH7.1 (Seawolf?) was XFree86 4.1.x

I would guess that a quick Google search using (XFree86 XF86 XFree RH7.1
DRI Radeon ) etc might confirm this for you.

Best wishes,
