You would make you life easier if you had a console login. Regrettably I don't know how you can
change that since you don't seem to be able to login at all. Possibly, like in my distro, the
login script gives you the possibility to switch to the other login alternative (in my case to the
interactive login) during the boot process; in my case you have to react pretty fast because the
option remains open only one second or so...
