Re: X config fails on Titan P4 with AGP video card (nVidiaGeFarce2 MMX)

Robyn Manning, you are a genius !
Thanks for solving my problem.

The short of it for anyone about to try fiddling with options on whatever
driver that gets automatically installed that looks like it might be almost
right, is this:-
run a PCI scan - for X it is an option of Xconfig, but you can use lspci to
get similar info. If the PCI scan says odd things, take notice of it as well
as the (EE) errors from the X log, and consider trying to find and install a
new driver for the adapter you've got.

If any of the XFree86 developers are monitoring this, a clear message should
be included if the initial Linux install autodetect fails, pointing out that
the driver (in my case "nv") might be close, but think about look around for
a better one.

It should have been obvious, but its the sort of newbie hurdle that ought to
be pointed out more clearly in the installation scripts.
When I saw the setup program fail to list the amount of video ram available
as an option, I wrongly assumed that the driver was near good enough to use
(an easy assumption to make, because it doesnt just switch back to text mode
or put up a message clearly saying install X manually after finding and
installing the best driver, it carries on with a low resolution setup
dialogue (similar appearance to a BIOS setup) and lets you keep going
without actually saying that the driver installed will run no more than a
text console, and even though it will manage that, X wont work and needs a
better driver. In cases like this, the distribution install process should
put up a warning message like "this version of the linux distribution and
its auto detect wont support your video card well enough to run X, but you
will be able to set up Linux without X. Once that is done, try to find a
driver for your video card and install it manually").
Anyway, after making the (now embarrassing) assumption that because the
low-res setup dialogue ran OK, it was just a matter of tweaking the options
on the X config using the driver that was there, I wasted a lot of time with
experiments doomed to failure. Thats all behind me now, becase I have X
working with the Nvidia driver called "nvidia", with the AGP options
recommended in the driver documentation.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions, particularly Robyn.

regards
DCJ.
