ACK! Don't do that unless nothing else works! Try this - as root, chown root.X11 /var/log/XFree86.0.log then - chmod 664 /var/log/XFree86.0.log then, either make all users who will run X a member of the group X11, or make /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 SGID X11 rather than SUID root.
