CALL FOR EARLY CAREER PARTICIPANTS at the workshop: "Bridging the gap
between mathematical modelling of lava flows and field observations"

This strategic workshop will take place in *Edinburgh, UK, 9th â?? 13th June
2025. *It is hosted and funded by the International Centre for Mathematical
Sciences, and we are also grateful to the QJMAM/IMA fund for an award to
support the participation of ECRs.

This strategic workshop will bring together applied mathematicians and
physical volcanologists to tackle major challenges in predicting and
understanding lava flows.
The aim of mathematical modelling of lava flows is to reduce the complex
physical system into a simpler configuration that retains enough key
processes to provide valuable insights. The skill of the modeller is in
selecting the processes that are included and thus close collaboration with
volcanologists is vital for success. At this workshop, we will deploy this
collaborative modelling methodology to research questions including:

   - How to best mathematically capture non-isothermal features of lava
   flows?
   - What physics controls the bifurcation of lava flows?
   - What kind of data is needed to drive the next steps of mathematical
   model development?

The participating ECRs will play a key role in the working groups during
the intensive week-long program. They will be encouraged to write-up a
summary of their groupâ??s results with a hope to extending the
collaborations.

Applications:
Up to six competitive scholarships are available for PhD students and early
career researchers (up to two years post PhD) to attend the program. This
will cover accommodation and meals in Edinburgh, as well as substantial
support towards travel costs. We encourage applications from
underrepresented groups. To apply, please send a short CV and half-page
cover letter expressing your interest to ehinton@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx by *Friday
20th December*. Informal enquiries can also be made to this email address.
