Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit to the following session on lava flow hazard
assessment, including monitoring, modeling, and generating actionable
hazard products for users, at the IAVCEI 2025 Scientific Assembly in Geneva!

*Session: Lava flow hazard assessment: measurement and characterization,
pre- and syn-eruptive modelling, and communication*
(Theme: 6. Hazard, Risk and Impact)

Lava flows are destructive and mesmerizing, with the potential to last
years and be observed in relative safety. For locals, lava flows can be
fast or slow moving disasters, but they also draw visitors seeking
thrilling experiences. Authorities, residents, and visitors all need
reliable and useful information about where lava flows are, how active they
are, and where they might be headed. Long-term understanding of inundation
risk is also required for planning and preparedness. In this session, we
will consider the life cycle of operational lava flow hazard products: from
measurement to modelling to communication. We invite contributions studying
monitoring and measurement of rheological or flow behavior, deterministic
and probabilistic approaches, short- and long-term inundation forecasts, as
well as impact and risk assessments, preparedness, public communication,
tourism, and emergency management. We are particularly interested in
contributions highlighting technical aspects which target stakeholder needs
and approaches to long-duration or complex eruptions.
*This session is sponsored by the IAVCEI Commission on Volcanic Hazards and
Risk.*
Conveners:
Hannah Dietterich (US Geological Survey, Anchorage, United States)
