1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: "Williams, Daniel Blair" <dbwilliams@xxxxxxxx> 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 Dear Colleagues, I am currently working on a research project to map the composition of volcanic ash clouds with high-resolution (spectroscopic) remote sensing in the thermal infrared (TIR), a collaborative effort between the University of Pittsburgh and NASA JPL. One of the objectives of this project is to determine if the documented changes in the SiO2 content of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull tephra was expressed as changes in the spectra of the ash plumes. Theoretical modeling suggests that we should detect such changes, but we need detailed spectroscopic measurements of tephra in the laboratory to work out the systematics of the change in spectra due to changes in composition. In order to do this I was hoping to see if anyone in the community has 2010 Eyjafjallajökull tephra that that they would be willing to share with us for this study. If possible, I would like to obtain samples from the two explosive phases, I and III (as defined by Gudmundsson et al., 2012). I will be performing an FTIR analysis set up for emission, so the sample won't be destroyed. I will however need to separate each sample into different size fractions, owing to the complicating spectral effects seen in those particles < 63 microns. Since there may be some sample loss during this process, I was hoping to acquire at least 50 cm3 of sample to guarantee that I will be able to obtain a spectrum of each size fraction (although more than this amount is always preferable).
