fluid dynamics to apply for this Post- Doctoral Research Scholar position.
This is a full-time position *with a starting date expected no later than

The selected candidate will work in the volcanology group, School of
Geosciences, University of South Florida and conduct research for the NSF
CAREER Project entitled “Developing a consensual validation and
benchmarking procedure for Pyroclastic Density Current (PDC) hazard
models”. The tasks of the Postdoctoral Researcher assigned to the project
will be (but not limited) to: (1) implement the physical/sedimentological
PDC models; (2) create a database of PDC metrics/components; and (3) set up
the model validation/benchmarking exercises. In addition, the selected
candidate will work with the volcanology group to write and publish
manuscripts, prepare and submit proposals related to the group’s current
and planned research agenda, and provide support in terms of the daily
activities associated with existing research. The candidate is also
encouraged to develop his/her own research agenda.



*QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):*



Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in volcanology, geology, geophysics, computer sciences or a
related area with research focus in computational fluid dynamics. Must meet
university criteria for appointment to the rank of Postdoctoral Fellow.



Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with research expertise or experience in one or more of the
following will be reviewed favorably: volcanology, field-based studies
and/or laboratory experiments of granular and/or multiphase flows,
computational fluid dynamics, physics and/or numerical modeling of granular
and/or multiphase flows, quantitative data modeling and analysis,
statistical and mathematical modeling, programming.

*[Overview]* Volcanic degassing is an important indicator of deeper
processes occurring at active volcanoes.  Carbon isotopes are important
tools which can provide a baseline from which to gauge future activity.
Whether collected from soil gas, fumaroles, or dense plume by aid of a
drone, volcanic gas samples contain enough carbon dioxide to allow
variations in the stable carbon isotopic ratios to be measured and
interpreted in terms of eruption potential.

This one-hour webinar will feature John Stix (Professor, McGill University)
and Fiona D’Arcy (PhD student, McGill University) joined by Gregor Lucic
(Application Scientist, Picarro) as they delve into three volcanoes. Carbon
isotopes have been measured at each with the use of the Picarro Cavity Ring
Down Spectrometers G1101-*i* and G2201-*i* deployed on location at these
hot spots.

·         Gregor will introduce the Picarro technology which can facilitate
these measurements, and will share his experience at Long Valley caldera,
where he used a CRDS G1101-i instrument.

·         John will discuss the usefulness and challenges overcome when
applying in-situ CRDS at Turrialba volcano, Costa Rica.

·         Fiona will present the recent field campaign at Stromboli volcano
in Italy, where the samples collected by drone during the day were analyzed
nightly by CRDS and IRIS.

In addition to learning about the unique application of Picarro instruments
at volcanoes, imagery from the heart of these magnificent features will be
enough to captivate the adventurer in each of you!

Do you work at the interface between earth science and human health?
Please consider taking advantage in December of a unique opportunity to
present your work to a broad spectrum of colleagues with similar
interests.  The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is celebrating its
one-hundredth anniversary with a meeting in Washington, D.C., 10-14
December 2018.  The meeting will mark the launch of the AGU’s new GeoHealth
Section and will feature many special sessions on topics related to earth
science and human health.  To encourage broad participation in the
GeoHealth sections, AGU has made it possible for non-AGU members to submit
GeoHealth abstracts and register for the meeting at member rates.  In
addition, AGU members will not be subject to the usual one-abstract limit
if their second abstract is submitted to a GeoHealth session.

We hope these factors encourage you to consider contributing to the
GeoHealth special session that we are organizing, entitled:


*Learning from our Ancestors. Using modern earth science methods to
understand ancient practices.*   Ancient societies interacted with their
natural environments in many ways.  Taking the waters, imbuing certain
stones with special powers, and even ingesting soils for improved health
are practices that can be found around the world.  Modern earth science
allows us to study these practices in greater detail in order to understand
their origins and evaluate their efficacy.  Modern earth science methods
also make it possible for us to understand how ancient societies interacted
with the landscape in order to ensure a constant supply of food and water,
to secure shelter and protection and to obtain raw materials needed to make
tools and wage war.  This session welcomes all contributions that allow us
to use earth science to understand and learn from the practices of our
ancestors.


So whether your primary discipline is medicine, archaeology, sociology,
anthropology, public health, agronomy, plant or animal science, ecology,
marine science or something we haven’t even listed here, please think about
submitting an abstract to our session.

Project Summary:



Low-silica ‘mafic’ magmas are the most common magmas to erupt on Earth.
Because their viscosity is low, they usually form lava flows or weak
explosive eruptions. However, mafic-composition volcanoes can produce much
stronger, Plinian-style eruptions capable of dispersing ash fall over
thousands of square kilometers, and producing deadly, landscape-altering
ash flows that travel tens of kilometers from source.  Despite their
potential impact, the mechanisms responsible for generating mafic, Plinian
eruptions are not understood. This project targets the 13.4_ka (~12 km3 DRE)
and ~12.6 ka (<1 km3 DRE) mafic eruptions at Volcán Llaima, Chile, which
produced extensive ash flow deposits found radially around the volcano. The
difference in eruption sizes permits investigation of processes that
promote large-volume, caldera-forming mafic eruptions versus smaller volume
Plinian mafic eruptions. A full suite of diverse but complimentary methods,
including petrology, geochemistry, physical volcanology, decompression
experiments, and rheology experiments, allows the research team to address
the broad, fundamental research question of what magmatic and crustal
conditions promote and trigger mafic, Plinian eruptions.
