Eruptive activity may prohibit access to regions near the volcano or destroy deployed equipment. Other locations can simply be impractical to reach. Thus, volcanoes are often monitored and studied with an incomplete data set. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are now bridging the gap between direct and remote measurements by enabling observations and in-plume measurements from a safe and accessible distance. Recent developments in UAS technology, matched by a drive towards increasingly lightweight and compact sensor payloads, have made their use more accessible to new users while simultaneously increasing their capability in terms of flight time, range, and instrumentation. To bring together the growing community of researchers using, or seeking to use, UAS methods to observe volcanoes, we invite submissions to this session describing novel applications of UAS to topics related to volcanic processes. *Conveners:* Brett Carr (Columbia University), Emma Liu (University of Cambridge), Danielle Moyer (Drexel University), Felix von Aulock (University of Liverpool) Sincerely, Brett Carr Emma Liu Danielle Moyer Felix W. von Aulock ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). Here is a brief FAQ to introduce the Series. Why are we introducing the GMPV-VGP Joint Session Series? We believe there are some topics which can really benefit from the attention of the full breadth of AGU and EGU communities, and wish to encourage a bottom-up process whereby such sessions can be proposed in a coordinated manner. What are Joint GMPV-VGP Session Series? Coordinated by the VGP section of AGU and GMPV Division of EGU, the GMPV-VGP session series is a sequence of science sessions conducted consecutively at EGU General Assembly and AGU Fall meetings, for 2 or more meetings. Thus in the current call we ask for sessions that will be held in EGU2019, followed by AGU2019, and potentially also EGU2020 and AGU2020. What is the purpose? The purpose of the joint sessions is therefore to focus the attention of the scientific community on an important, quickly evolving subject, and thereby facilitate scientific progress. The series may allow the full implications of a breakthrough in one sub-discipline to be explored in other sub-disciplines, for example. How can I propose a joint session? Identify a timely research area that would benefit, and coordinate with colleagues to produce an outline of conveners for each session, then complete the attached application form and send to the GMPV division president gmpv@xxxxxx and VGP section president manga@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx by 31 July. How are proposals assessed? They will be examined in terms of their science quality, likely impact, multidisciplinarity and organisation by the science teams from both divisions. Do all the same conveners have to be present at each meeting? No, but some overlap is welcome, and a clear plan for who will be convening which session and why is part of the proposal process. Why should I do propose something? These will be high visible sessions which will attract a lot of attention from the VGP/GMPV community. You will be able to make quicker progress in a cutting-edge area of science. When should I send the application form? *By the end of the deadline which is 31 July.* How will this work in the programme organisation? Selected Session Series will be highlighted as such in the scientific programmes of the meetings, and given a particular focus in communications from GMPV and VGP. Best, Mike Burton and Michael Manga GMPV President and VGP President ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). Accordingly, the past decade has seen many efforts to bridge the gap between observational field volcanology and laboratory-based analog and numerical studies. Some of the most promising avenues are large-scale (decimeters to meters) experiments designed to simulate natural magmatic processes including magma ascent, eruption and transport. For this session we solicit contributions on the latest designs for such large-scale experiments and their findings. Presentations may cover any type of volcanic process and/or studies focused on understanding how scaling laws determine the applicability of extrapolating experimental results to natural-scale phenomena. *Comments:* We are currently discussing the possibility of presenting large-scale (meters) lava flow demonstrations at the AGU Fall meeting with representatives of the AGU and Convention Center. If successful, we will try to link this special session to those demonstrations. The *abstract submission site <https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/abstract-submissions/>* will open on *Wednesday, 13 June*. The deadline for all submissions is *Wednesday, 1 August 23:59 EDT*. Abstracts will not be accepted for review after this date. However, scientists are often reluctant to publicly communicate science. Stories about misrepresentation, trolling, and sensationalized reporting deter potential communicators from entering into the public sphere. This session aims to explore the concerns surrounding public communication of hazards and work towards finding solutions to some of the more common issues. The goal is to facilitate community-wide discussion about how we can more accurately, effectively and responsibly communicate science to a broad audience using various media and communications partnerships. We welcome in particular submissions that explore research-based evidence and personal case studies of both the challenges and rewards of communicating science through social media, mass media, institutional communications teams, and more, with a focus on lessons learned and best practices. We look forward to your contributions to our session. Best wishes from session conveners, Wendy Bohon (IRIS) and Beth Bartel (UNAVCO) ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
