AGU session on origins of continental intra-plate magmatism

Tired of the same old andesites?  Ready for some hard to pronounce rock names and minerals, exotic locations, and enigmatic processes?  Contribute to this Fall’s AGU session:

V014. Continental intraplate magmas - their origins and significance interpreted from multidisciplinary studies.

Intraplate continental magmas span from rhyolites, through dominant basalts, to exceptionally alkalic and carbonatitic compositions. This is probably the most diverse igneous environment accessible on Earth. The stability of the continents has also captured intraplate magmas over exceptionally long periods of time, providing a record of long-term geochemical and geodynamic evolution.  Recent advances in the understanding of intraplate continental magmatism have come from studies that combine geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods. This session welcomes investigations, particularly multi-disciplinary studies, of the processes, sources, and conditions within the lithosphere and upper mantle that generate intra-plate continental magmas.

Conveners: Tom Sisson (tsisson@xxxxxxxx), Vincent Salters (salters@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx), Kasia Liszewska (kazliszewska@xxxxxxxxx), Walter Mooney (mooney@xxxxxxxx)
