Dear colleagues,

While preparing your abstracts for this year's AGU Fall Meeting, please consider to submit to our session

V043: Volcanic ash plumes - Generation, Dynamics, Electrification, Dispersion and Impacts (https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/prelim.cgi/Session/53987):

Explosive volcanic eruptions may eject large amounts of pyroclastic material into Earth’s atmosphere, including volcanic ash. Ash plumes pose a hazard to human health, infrastructure and/or aviation industry. Mitigation of these hazards requires thorough understanding of key processes within the life cycle of volcanic ash that ultimately help to predict the transport paths of volcanic ash plumes. Recent improvements in lab-scale experiments, field studies, video imaging, numerical modeling and geophysical and remote-sensing methods have advanced this field of study. This session aims to gather scientists from the fields of volcanology, atmospheric sciences, bio-geochemistry, geology and geophysics to present their latest research on tephra generation, volcanic plume structure and dynamics, plume electrification, physio-chemical processes in plumes, and experimental / numerical studies on plume generation. This session will prompt discussions between AGU and EGU focus-areas and ultimately spur quality and accuracy of volcanic ash plume understanding, eruption monitoring and hazard mitigation efforts.

The abstract submission is now open and closes on August 1.  In case of any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Cassandra Smith (smithcm09@gmail.com).

On behalf of the conveners,

Sebastian Mueller
