Subject: USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory hiring an IT Specialist (Systems Administrator) 


The USGS Volcano Science Center is hiring an IT Specialist to be Systems Administrator at the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) in Anchorage, AK.  This is a permanent position with full benefits with a starting grade of GS 12. The incumbent will administer and maintain the Alaska Volcano Observatory's real-time geophysical (seismic, geodetic, satellite and ground-based imagery) monitoring system.  Duties also include administration of AVO’s data archive, supervision of other IT specialist(s), and working with geophysical instrumentation. During an eruption the incumbent will engage in rapid, time-critical exchanges with scientists to adapt the data processing and acquisition system to new analysis techniques that are being developed and refined.

We welcome applicants with the following: strong knowledge of and experience with real-time volcano monitoring data acquisition and analysis systems; expert knowledge and experience with Oracle RDBMS;  intimate knowledge of, and skill in applying, database management principles and methods; storage media tools; and IT security methods; knowledge of Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, associated devices, and the interoperability of systems sufficient to install, upgrade, troubleshoot, test, and maintain those systems and to optimize the functionality and performance of systems. In addition, applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to technical professionals and scientists within and outside the USGS.

AVO is a cooperative program with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, both in Fairbanks. In addition, AVO is part of the USGS Volcano Science Center, which is home to the five US volcano observatories. In Anchorage, AVO is collocated with the USGS Alaska Science Center, which has expertise in geologic mapping, mineral and energy assessments, glaciology, hydrology, and biology.
