Technician (m/f) position

 

to be filled as soon as possible.

 


We seek a motivated Technician with hard- and software experience to support our program for the scientific utilisation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, drones) in volcanological research. UAVs offer novel possibilities for the remotely operated visual and physicochemical 3D-characterisation of volcanoes and their eruptions. In collaboration with an experienced geoscientific team, the candidate is expected to develop innovative concepts including e.g. the integration and advancement of existing platforms and sensors. Maintenance and operation of UAVs for scientific investigations on land and at sea will be essential responsibilities.



Tasks:

  • Development of operational strategies, development and advancement of soft- and hardware solutions to realise scientific aims in close collaboration with project scientists (e.g. mapping, monitoring of eruption clouds)
  • Pilot training and operation of UAVs on land and at sea
  • System integration and optimisation of various electrochemical and optical sensors on UAV platforms, as well as control and evaluation software
  • Maintenance of equipment (servicing, repair, acquisition of spare parts)
  • Provision of field campaign data (videos, photographs, navigation and sensor data) for evaluation by the involved scientists
  • Support of the public relations work of the Earth System Knowledge Platform (eskp.de)

 


Requirement profile:

  •  A degree (preferably MSc or ME) in computer engineering, technical computer science, electrical engineering, mechatronics or a related, qualifying field
  • Experience with pertinent programming languages and databases
  • Practical experience and skills in the above described fields through professional training are of advantage
  • Thorough and independent way of working, capability for problem solving
  • Enthusiasm and motivation for the development of novel concepts for the utilisation of UAVs in a scientific-technical team
  • Experience in model aircraft construction and flight (in particular of UAVs) as well as knowledge regarding the current legal framework are of advantage
  • Business fluent German and English
  • Willingness to business trips (domestic and abroad) and participation in expeditions and research cruises
  • Driver’s license (class B) and capability for field work

 


The position is fixed-term for 2 years with the possibility to extend to a permanent position. Given the appropriate requirements, the salary will up to class E11 (TVöD-Bund) of the German salary scale for public employees. The position is not divisible.
