CIFRE PhD position in structural geology and geophysics applied to geothermal prospection in La Réunion
The goal of Volcanergie is to develop high-temperature geothermal energy in La Réunion, with the aim of providing an additional source of renewable energy to this volcanic island. In collaboration with the university of La Réunion, Volcanergie seeks a candidate for a CIFRE PhD thesis in structural geology and geophysics, applied to geothermal prospection.
Candidates must hold a MSc degree, be proficient with all the tools of structural geology (geological mapping, deformation structures interpretation, GIS, igneous and metamorphic petrology…), and should preferably possess a knowledge of electric geophysics (ERT, SP…). Excellent physical health and a pronounced taste for fieldwork in remote areas are prerequisites for every application. As the successful candidate will make the interface between the industry and the academic research, he/she must have demonstrated skills of team working and autonomy, as well as excellent writing capacities. If not fluent in French at the beginning of the position, the candidate will be expected to learn it during his/her PhD, in order to be able to read and use reports written in French. Any additional experience in geological prospection, field mapping or engineering geology, any peer-reviewed publication, as well as any skills in alpine climbing or canyoneering, will be considered as assets in the application.
The objective of the PhD thesis is to study the internal structure of Piton des Neiges volcano in order to locate the heat source and the pathways of hydrothermal circulation. From the standpoint of academic research, the successful applicant will thus have to improve knowledge about the geological history of Piton des Neiges volcano, and about the geodynamics of shield volcanoes in general. For the industry, the goal will be to correlate this knowledge with previous studies and prospection campains (geochemistry, hydrochemistry, airborne geophysics…), in order to provide a detailed characterization of the underground and to develop a strategy for drilling exploration.
Based in La Réunion, Volcanergie is born from the association of Akuo Energy Indian Ocean and Electerre de France. Both companies are specialized in the development of renewable energy sources worldwide. In 2016, Volcanergie has obtained a license of exclusivity for the prospection of geothermal energy in two areas of the Piton des Neiges massif, the cirques of Cilaos and Salazie. The Geosciences laboratory is an academic department of the university of La Réunion, specialized in hotspot volcano research. This laboratory belongs to the “école doctorale Sciences, Technologies, Santé” of the university, and is also affiliated to the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP, UMR CNRS 7154).
The PhD student will be employed by Volcanergie for a duration of 36 months from the beginning of the PhD, for an annual gross salary of 23484 €. The position will be based in La Réunion at two sites, Akuo Energy in Pierrefonds and Geosciences laboratory in Saint Denis.
