Malcolm Fletcher Howells
Malcolm, aged 83, died suddenly, painlessly and without fuss at his home in Leeds on Saturday 24 June [2017]. The previous day he was fully himself, bemoaning the demise of the BGS while delighted that its “dreaded mission statement” concerning Wales was illustrated with two of ‘his’ photographs of Crib Goch (Snowdon), and he was looking forward to visits by his daughters at the weekend.
Malcolm was an immensely popular, indeed lovable, Welsh rogue, widely versed and equally happy proclaiming topics across the arts, sciences, socialism, media and cookery. His own geological work in Snowdonia and that of the teams gathered around him there constitutes an extraordinary legacy as the most detailed and thorough depiction of marine volcanism and associated sedimentation ever produced, anywhere. Malcolm never lost his roots in the South Wales coalfield, the mining communities, the Welsh language and rugby, although his singing did once send the Princess of Nepal to bed. His three daughters, his extensive family and his extraordinary array of friends will sorely miss him.
