**EPMA Laboratory Specialist/Manager**
The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Louisiana State University invites applicants for a highly qualified Electron Microanalysis Specialist to manage the operation and user training on our JEOL 8230 Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer (EPMA). The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment with faculty and student researchers from a broad range of disciplines including Geosciences, Physics, Coastal Sciences, Material Sciences and Engineering, Energy Sciences and Agricultural Sciences, and industrial researchers. The EPMA is a micro-analytical instrument that will service the region and enhance collaborative partnerships with historically black colleges and universities.
The JEOL EPMA is housed within the Chevron Geomaterials Characterization Lab (CGCL) in the Geology & Geophysics Department, which is part of our Shared Instrument Facility (SIF) as a campus-wide research instrumentation core. The EPMA Specialist will report to the SIF manager.
The successful applicant must have a MS degree with a strong research background in Chemistry, Materials Science, Geosciences or related areas and have experience in the operation of the EMPA. The successful applicant must be reliable, highly organized, self-motivated, detail orientated, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to work independently and in a team environment is important. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellence in a timely manner.
The responsibilities of this position will include:
1. Day-to-day operations of the Electron Microprobe Lab.
2. Establishment of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for routine analytical techniques and training users on the operation of the instrument using the SOPs.
3. Support of the LSU educational mission through conducting lab demonstrations or performing analyses for and/or with students in educational courses.
4. Technical support and professional service to users as needed, such as scheduling, sample preparation, development of analytical strategies, instrument operation, and data acquisition.
5. Development of new experimental techniques that extend the application of the EPMA.
6. Routine preparation, instrument tuning, instrument maintenance and minor repairs.
7. Maintenance of a clean and organized lab, including routine safety checks and ordering supplies.
8. Recording of all instrument use and maintenance of log sheets for billing.
9. Report any issues associated with the EPMA to the SIF Manager
10. Other related duties as assigned by the SIF Manager, approved by the supervisor, including utilizing complementary analytical techniques for corroborating EPMA technique development, creating web based tools for learning electron microscopy fundamentals, and assisting with departmental courses utilizing instrumentation at the SIF.
Required Qualifications: Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Geosciences or related areas and a minimum of three (3) years of experience operating an EPMA.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Geosciences or related area. Research experience using EPMA data and experience in the operation of the EPMA.
