New Zealand Postdoc available:

A postdoctoral researcher is sought for research on submarine eruption dynamics of the 2012 Havre eruption (Carey et al. 2014).

A 2015 NSF-funded research cruise led by Rebecca Carey and Adam Soule provided the first-ever opportunity to observe and sample in-place the fresh deposits of a major silicic deep submarine eruption. On the cruise we acquired datasets and a sample suite which is unparalleled globally, and the postdoctoral project is underpinned by geophysical, geological and sample information collected during the cruise.

The postdoc will be based at University of Otago, New Zealand, and work with James White. The project also involves extensive work with Bernd Zimanowski and colleagues (Wuerzburg, Germany) to establish heat-transfer rates using fragmentation experiments, and to link them with the sizes and types of particles produced. There will also be some analogue experimentation with saturation processes of steam-filled pumice immersed in water, and a large block of work with Michael Manga (Berkeley, California) on fluid-dynamic modelling that uses the Wuerzburg results as eruption-specific input values.

The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills and, ideally, experience with analogue experimentation. The position is funded for 2.5 years on the Otago postdoctoral scale http://www.otago.ac.nz/humanresources/otago103639.pdf
