The USGS Volcano Science Center is hiring a Research Geologist to join the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) in Anchorage, AK.  This is a permanent position with full benefits with a starting grade of GS 12 or 13.

We welcome applicants with strong research backgrounds in physical volcanology, volcano geology, and stratigraphy, with significant fieldwork experience on volcanoes, and with substantial experience in the use of geochemical and petrologic investigations to improve understanding of volcanic and magmatic processes. Please note that applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The application period is currently open and will close on Friday, December 23, 2016, at midnight Eastern Standard Time.

Some of the duties of this position will include:
  • Serving as a principal investigator of volcanic eruptive processes and history, and applying research results to inform volcano hazards assessments and the interpretation and forecasting of volcanic eruptions.
  • Mapping volcanic deposits, applying stratigraphic principles, conducting laboratory analyses, and using geochemistry, petrology, and Quaternary dating techniques in research investigations.
  • Incorporating disparate data sets into research of volcanic processes, and working with a diverse staff with expertise in physical volcanology, volcano geophysics, numerical modeling, and remote sensing.
  • Disseminating results of research by publishing as a primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and presenting results and leading sessions at national and international meetings.
  • Performing  field work, often in sub-Arctic wilderness, including in the vicinity of erupting volcanoes. Nearly all work is helicopter- and/or boat-based and involves landing at unprepared sites in mountainous terrain. Some work will require hiking long distances over difficult terrain, sometimes carrying heavy loads. Some work may require mountaineering skills such as glacier travel.
  • Assisting in volcano monitoring and forecasting activities at AVO or as needed at other US volcano observatories.

For details on the vacancy announcement, including specific qualification requirements and application procedures, go to http://www.usajobs.gov and refer to Job Announcement Number  SAC-2017-0103 ( https://www.usajobs.gov/Search/?keyword=SAC-2017-0103&Location=&AutoCompleteSelected= ).

The U.S. Geological Survey is an equal employment opportunity employer.

AVO is a cooperative program with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, both in Fairbanks. In addition, AVO is part of the USGS Volcano Science Center, which is home to the five US volcano observatories. In Anchorage, AVO is collocated with the USGS Alaska Science Center, which has expertise in geologic mapping, mineral and energy assessments, glaciology, hydrology, and biology.
